The holidays are coming up, and it’s a perfect time to don my apron, flour up my washed hands, and fire up my oven to make kringlas — a delectable, doughy cookie that’s slightly sweet and perfect with a light spread of butter and a warm beverage.
Growing up, my grandparents lived across the country from me; however, every winter, without fail, a box packed with kringlas showed up at our front door. The entire box would be gone by the end of the day! These treats are so nostalgic and are surprisingly easy to make.
To make them, here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1/2 cup margarine
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 cups of buttermilk
- 6 tbsp of baking soda
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 1 tsp of salt
- 6 cups of flour
How to Make Them:
- Before beginning, mix 2 tbsp of baking soda to your buttermilk and 4 tbsp of baking soda to your flour.
- In a large mixing bowl, add your sugar and margarine and cream them together.
- Then, add in the rest of your ingredients to your bowl (beaten eggs, buttermilk, vanilla, salt, and flour). Stir until a dough is formed.
- Refrigerate the dough overnight.
- When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350॰F.
- Flour your hands and baking surface, as the dough can be sticky. Stretch the dough into a rolled strip, then twist into a figure eight or pretzel shape.
- Place the kringlas in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. They should still be pale, don’t let them brown!
- Serve and enjoy. You can eat them plain or spread a thin layer of butter on the flat side before eating.
These kringlas are a simple way to indulge this holiday season. Making and eating kringlas is a holiday tradition I look forward to all year long, and now you can enjoy their fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness!
