Homemade Croutons: Turning Everyday Bread Into a Delicious Topping

Homemade croutons are easy, comforting, and so delicious! It might seem easier to grab a bag from the store, and sometimes, that’s okay.

But making your own gives you full control over flavor, a way to use up leftover bread, and a fresher, crispier texture.

Ingredients

This recipe is flexible and forgiving, so season to your taste, but this is how I typically make mine.

  • Bread (any kind you have on hand)
  • Olive oil (a light drizzle)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)
  • Garlic powder (to taste)
  • A dash of oregano

Step 1: Cut the Bread

Start by slicing your bread into small cubes.

They don’t have to be perfect. Slightly uneven pieces actually give you a mix of textures, with some being extra crispy and some a little softer inside.

Step 2: Season

Place your bread cubes into a bowl or directly onto a baking sheet.

Drizzle with olive oil, just enough to lightly coat the cubes.

Then add the seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic powder, oregano) and toss everything together until the cubes are evenly coated.

Step 3: Bake

Oven Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F
  • Spread the cubes evenly on a baking sheet
  • Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden and crisp

Air Fryer Method:

  • Place the cubes in the air fryer basket
  • Air fry at 350°F for 6–7 minutes, or until golden

Keep an eye on them, as they can crisp up quickly!

Once they’re golden and crisp, let them cool slightly and then enjoy them however you like. You can

  • Toss them over a fresh salad
  • Add them to soups for a bit of crunch
  • Snacked on straight from the tray (no judgment here!)
